The newest bisexual slang term being bandied about and used as a classifier on dating sites and social networking sites is: Flexisexual. Whatever happened to the standard: Bisexual? Or to Pansexual or Omnisexual which rose up in the late 90′s as alternative ways to state one was bi. “Bisexual always sounded too clinical to me,” one of my bi female friends lamented. “Pansexual sounded like pandemic, like you were going to have a widespread outbreak of sex. Omnisexual sounded like you were an omnivore, that you’d just devour everything sexual in sight.” The more I pondered Pan and Omni, I hadn’t heard someone say they were Pan or Omni in years, those terms seemed to have fallen out of pop culture vernacular. So I asked my friend if she’s now stating she’s flexisexual or flexi? “No, just bi. Flexi is too trendy-sounding.”

Perhaps too web-trendy? The internet has the dispersive ability to make a word, a phrase, a video clip go viral. Although Flexi hasn’t hit viral status yet, it seems to be popping up on Twitter, dating sites and social networking sites as the trendy new way to describe that one is bisexual. I’ve especially seen the term used by more women than men. Men seem to stick to the classic bi or bisexual, while more women have co-opted the trendy new flexi. Why would women gravitate to flexisexual? Women are generally more trend-friendly than men, continually adapting to new fashion, make-up and hair trends and perhaps even word trends as well. But only time will tell if flexisexual is a passing word trend for bisexual or if it has sticking power.
